Olde Naples, FL
The city of Naples grew up around the seashore and a boat pier, which served as the town's lifeline during the 1880s. At that time, well-to-do northerners came southward and built homes around the pier.
The arrival of the railroad in the 1920s, and the completion of the Tamiami Trail (Highway 41) at about the same time, spurred the town’s growth eastward. But, the heart of Naples remained where the first shell-paved roads had once run - the area now called Olde Naples.
Well-known for its tree-lined downtown shopping plazas, sidewalk cafes, and lively nightlife, Olde Naples also holds many of the city's historic and architectural treasures, including its wide, sugar-white sand beaches. A recent renaissance of Olde Naples has brought boutiques and eye-pleasing streetscaping to Fifth Avenue South at the center of Naples.
The beautiful banyan, flowering Poinciana trees, and coconut palms serve to charm all those who stroll the avenues of Olde Naples that stretch all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. “Olde Naples” loosely refers to the area that extends from South Golf Drive southward to Aqualane Shores, although strictly speaking, the term "Olde Naples" refers only to the section around the Naples Pier.
Fifth Avenue South combines a historic main street community feel with that of a sophisticated world-class destination. Residents and visitors also enjoy the ambience of Third Street in historic Olde Naples that offers an elegant shopping area of more than 100 fine apparel shops, gift boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries.
Located in the southern section of Naples--between Naples Bay and the Gulf of Mexico--the Third Street South shopping area has a charm and elegance that is designed for your pleasure. A local pub in the original neighborhood, Olde Naples Pub, is a favorite hang-out among locals, and is just two blocks from Naples historic fishing pier. After visiting the beach, it’s time to drop by and enjoy a frosty mug and some of the traditional Naples pub fare.
